Heus aquí un Joan Martí. El passat mes de febrer traspassà el llindar de la vida temporal. Marxà, però no ens deixà; més aviat ens espera. Mentrestant, ens acompanya amb la seva obra, sobretot, la seva millor “obra”: família i amics. Ells s’han citat a la Sala Rusiñol; ells mateixos ens tracen el perfil (questa vegada, “no ràpid”) del pintor enyorat: entra a veure les “Últimes obres d’en Joan Martí. Exposició homenatge”. Mercès, Joan, per tanta bellesa!
L’Ignasi Cabanas, director de la Sala Rusiñol, ens dóna la benvinguda i saluda els qui presideixen la presentació d’aquesta exposició-homenatge: particularment, l’Encarnita, vídua d’en Joan Martí; l’alcalde de Sant Cugat del Vallès, en Lluís Recoder; els senyors Manel Guardiola i Jordi Bech, amics íntims d’en Joan; i, com no!, en Josep Mª Guardiola, també veterà coneixedor de la persona i obra del pintor homenatjat.
«Aquesta exposició estava programada des de feia anys! Tot pensant en la tardor del 2009, en Joan va anar treballant. Vagi pel davant el meu agraïment a l’Encarnita, que ha volgut mantenir el compromís i la data d’aquesta exposició. Amb en Joan havíem teixit una relació important. En els darrers anys, venia freqüentment a la Sala: es prenia el seu passeig i aquest era el punt d’arribada: estava una estona amb nosaltres i, després, un taxi el tornava a casa. El recordo com una persona excel·lent; es mereix un gran homenatge».
En Manel Guardiola recordava amb emoció quan acompanyà en Joan Martí a Madrid, el passat 15 de gener, en la que seria ja la seva darrera exposició en vida. «I, si bé ara no és aquí, ens ha deixat coses importants: l’Encarnita, els fills… I també ens ha deixat la seva millor forma d’expressió: els quadres, exposats arreu del món (Amèrica, Europa, Japó…). Tenia una gran percepció de la figura humana: impressionen els retrats que feu del rei Joan Carles, d’en Jordi Pujol… I el de la final del Barça, a Wenbley. Era un gran dibuixant. Acostumava a dir: ‘Jo pinto, i res més». La seva obra és única i irrepetible; forma part de la història pictòrica d’aquest país».
El Sr. Jordi Bech revelà detalls molt entranyables de la història d’en Joan. «Compatíem amistat des de jovenets. Ell tenia una estima profunda i especial per la pintura i el dibuix. Reocrdo que, ja des dels 12 anys, quan jugàvem, ell aprofitava per a treure uns papers i llapis, i es posava a dibuixar. Conservem molts retrats i anotacions que ell feia, simplement, perquè ho portava dins. Fou un pintor vocacional i gaudia amb el que feia (…)». 
En Josep Mª Cadena, veterà coneixedor de l’ambient cultural i artístic de Barcelona: «El vaig conèixer, endinsat ja en l’activitat pictòrica, a “La Punyalada”, un lloc en que els reunien pintors -majorment figuratius- amb col·leccionistes i crítics d’art. Jo començava en aquell moment. Els qui eren allí s’expressaven amb llibertat. En Joan es posava seriós quan es discutien conceptes sobre pintura. Ell comença sent “portadista”: realitzava portades i il·lustracions de novel·les (…). Creia en l’art i en el progrés dins de l’art. De fet, hagués pogut ser sempre portadista: hagués estat més segur per a ell. Però cercà el més difícil: arriscar-se davant de cada quadre, arriscar-se davant la vida».
«En Joan usava un pseudònim força significatiu: Petronius. Ell era l’àrbitre de la elegància: en la dicció, en el contingut, en la presentació de les coses. L’art havia de ser una manera d’arribar als altres tot donant una lliçó sobre els modes, sense estridències, amb equilibri en el color. Sabia trobar la llum i l’ombra. Per exemple, (…) aquí teniu el quadre del “Monestir”, que mostra la força del sol sobre la façana d’aquest edifici que distingeix la ciutat (…)».
«Treballà en diversos països i participà en col·leccions internacionals. Però, alhora, visqué amb intensitat allò que tenia més a prop: Sant Cugat del Vallès, on trobà tranquil·litat. Anà estimant la ciutat i s’integrà en la societat “sancugatenca”: els quadres ho demostren. Estimava les persones i era amic dels amics. Aquí mateix, a l’entrada, tenim un dibuix-retrat d’en Francesc Galí fet pel Joan. Era una persona oberta, comprensiva. Malgrat el seu posat distant, com podeu apreciar en el quadre de l’aparador de la Sala, el seu poder era la comprensió de la gent».
Lluís Recoder, alcalde de Sant Cugat: «L’Encarnita m’invità a aquesta inauguració d’en Joan i no he volgut perdre-me-la. Aquesta és la seva primera exposició després del seu traspàs. Trobar-nos enmig d’aquests quadres ens fa reviure moltes coses. Amb una tècnica exquisida, ens ha deixat una molt bona obra, amb molts racons de la ciutat de Sant Cugat, que ell estimà, que feu seva, molt pròpia. Hi ha un quadre del Carrer Valldoreix on s’hi troba una sabateria: allí era jo un dia, quan aparegueren en Joan i l’Encarnita, i m’ajudaren a escollir unes sabates (que encara tinc!). Ens quedà una cosa pendent: era molt generós i se’ns oferí per a donar classes gratuïtament.
