Inauguration of Jesús Casaus (May 14th 2010)
The Rusiñol Gallery celebrates its 24th Anniversary with a commemorative exhibition honouring an artist of significant and multi-coloured creativeness: Jesús Casaus (1926-2002). Of a fauvist tradition, this Catalonian whose development is based in the avant-garde Paris, is today one of the most celebrated artists in Europe and in the Unites States.
Ignasi Cabanas welcomes the honour of having been able to contribute to the remembrance of Jesús Casaus, who passed away last 2002. «This is not a normal exhibition. We just pretend with it to keep alive Casaus’ work. He was an important person for this gallery». As the Rusiñol Gallery’s director he welcomed Iñaki Casaus, son of the painter now honoured.
Josep Mª Cadena also joined the gratitude and fulfilment this exhibition-homage represents for its extraordinary appeal, «that speaks highly for Jesus’ family and for the Rusiñol Gallery». This selection of Works gives a complete vision of the artist, and his paintings clearly represent the style that defines him. Piercing-eyed painter, he sought and made things his own. His faces reflected those things he was wondering about when he was painting.
Cadena met Casaus many years ago, and was able to write a few details regarding Casaus’ formation as a painter: he studied at the Acadèmia Baixas; he became a trainee with the celebrated Joan Serra and Lluís Muntané; he was also influenced by Albert Marquet’s colours (1875-1947) and the fauvist experiences he was able to admire while in Paris… Jesús Casaus entered an each time more exalted chromatism, with a very much alive and personal painting style that has been highly praised in Europe and America.
«This exhibition is borne from an available selection of Works. From them the painting emerges like a language, like a way to say things. In this collection we have the opportunity to approach those events that have happened to us collectively: we can see the reconstruction of a past, which is also our present because Jesús Casaus did not stay with the anecdote of some things but he also represented the way we are».
Representing the artist’s family, Iñaki Casaus, spoke a few words of gratitude. «My family is very pleased that my father has been chosen for this tribute and that I have been able to participate». In the picture we can see Iñaki Casaus with his son, little Jesús Casaus, grandson of the honoured painter.
